Painting for my other class

This is the beginning of the painting I started for my Painting 2 class. I'm not sure if this really works or not for what I am doing for tutorials or if i would want to even use it but this is what it looks like so far. There is going to be some nice light and shadow areas in this painting and there is a figure present but I don't know if it really works as a portrait or more of a still life.
